Looking Up.

July 21st, 2008

So last night I got so see something amazing.

I stood and watched the Space Station as it passed by in the twilight sky.  It was amazing to watch something that is 240 miles above the earth fly through the sky at the speed of like 12,000 mph.  Awsome.

As I stood there and watched this 90 second flight, I learned a lot I didn’t know about viewing the Space Station from earth.  I learned things like its always been visible, not like the planets or a comet where they are visible only during certain season, or year.  But the Space Station is visible to someone all the time and it passes overhead, in my location, every hour and thirty-four minutes!  And until last night, I had never seen it before.  It launched in 1998 and here almost 10 years later, I finally saw it for the first time.

Why did it take me almost 10 years?  Maybe because, before last night, I didn’t have anyone around to tell me what I was looking for as I looked up.

And then I thought, isn’t that how we are in life.  We can spend our days looking up but it isn’t until we have someone by our side pointing out the wonder of the heavens that we really see what is up there.  And, if we are not willing to stay connected with others, we can loose years of wonder and awe of knowing what we are looking at as we look up.
